Master thesis fieldwork in KenyaUser's  Margarita Oja Da Silva project in the category Environment

My name is Margarita and I am studying for a master's degree in Sweden at Uppsala University, majoring in Sustainable Development. With my studies, I have reached the point where only the thesis remains to be done. As part of my thesis I will travel to Nairobi, Kenya to do fieldwork.

The topic of the thesis is to look at the role of projects initiated by the local community in moving towards city sustainability. As a case study, I am collaborating with the local non-profit organization Voices4Change, which carries out urban agriculture projects in the poorer areas of the city so that members of the local community can grow their own food and don't have to depend too much on increased prices and other external factors but have more freedom and access to fresh, healthy food. My role in this is to find out what works well in this urban agriculture initiative so that it can be expanded to other poorer areas and what can be done better.

I will be on fieldwork for 3 weeks, from 7th of February until 26th of February. During this time, I will conduct interviews with members of the local community who are involved in the activities of the organization, with the initiators and coordinators of the NGO, as well as with the members of the city government, in order to find out what role they see in grassroots initiatives. In addition to interviews I will also conduct participatory observations.

I need a total of at least 1300 euros to carry out the field work, which would cover:

  • Plane tickets 850€
  • Accommodation 300€
  • Transportation and food 100€
  • Visa costs 50€

Thank you for helping my project come to life!

To all the supporters I will send a copy of the thesis after the defence (June 2023) for you to have an opportunity to read the final version of the thesis.
