By the Tallinn – Tartu road, approximately 15 km from Tartu, there is a miniature version of the famous Hollywood hills with the word HOLLYWOOD installed on the slope. This Estonian Hollywood hill is a kind of entrance to Tartu region and southern Estonia.
The story of Hollywood hill
26 years ago a few students of the University of Tartu were eating at a diner by the hill and noticed the peculiar and somewhat familiar slope. Understanding what causes the familiarity, created a thought of do something exciting.
Maybe it was a dream of America or maybe something entirely else that inspired these students – but as a result, the letters were built out of old fence boards and taken up to a hill during the daytime with the help of a good car and a trailer.
None of the youngsters thought probably, that the monument would become popular over time and would remain in its place for a long time. Today, thousands of drivers passing this location, have admired the hill slope, the letters on it and stopped to take pictures of it.
About our idea
But what if the Hollywood hill was something more than just the letters on the hillside on the Tartu-Tallinn highway? What if it could be one of the icons of Tartu region and bring together people from Tartu and further? What if we could say that this is our own Hollywood?
Today, unfortunately, the hill is covered with trees and bushes, and the letters are sinking into oblivion. We, NGO Hollywoodi Mägi, have taken to our mission to bring back life to Hollywood hill – to renew the letters, make the hill visible and create a safe opportunity to climb on hill slope and enjoy the beautiful views from the platform.
Our vision is that Hollywood hill is attractive, exceptional, and well-known destination for both residents of Tartu region and the people visiting the region. We are creating a place that allowed for local community and businesses to develop further unique set of local services. We are sure that visible and unique Hollywood hill and services connected to it will have lot to offer also to our foreign quest.
Our goals
- First 4300 euros: We are shifting our focus to making new Hollywood-worthy "HOLLYWOOD" letters.
- Additional 8350 euros: The next goal is to create a viewing platform under the letters, from where all can see beautiful views of Tartu region. This is a place to take some time off and take a photo to remind ourselves of this unique location.
- Additional 9740 euros: The third goal is to build a staircase that leads to the viewing platform allowing safer accessibility to wider group of visitors.
